AN ISLAND TURTLE LOOK AT
Around Gapyeong downtown, there is a town named Jara-mok (Turtle’s neck). Two hills, one big and one small, are similar to a turtle’s head and body. This turtle’s neck area is called Jara-mok. Where this turtle figure is looking is Jara-sum (Turtle Island). Jarasum was appeared when Cheongpyeong-dam was constructed. Because it was newly appeared, the island had been called unspecific names such as Chinese Island and Peanut Island. After years, Gapyeong Land Naming Committee decided the name it as Jarasum.
DRAWING KOREA ON THE WORLD MAP
‘International’ in Jarasum International Jazz Festival is not just inviting foreign artists from other countries. It is more than enough to call the festival ‘international’ since during the 11 times festivals, 53 countries 777 bands visited the festival. However, this is not the end of the ‘international’ part. The festival steps outside of Korea, international cooperation are being actively operated. Yearly project ‘National Focus Project’ (2015: Germany) that intensively introduces a specific country to the audience has been worked together with the countries’ embassies and/or cultural institutes. Also, the festival has visited world jazz festivals such as 'Jazz Sous Les Pommiers' in France, ‘Penang Island Jazz Festival’ in Malaysia, ‘Takatsuki Jazz Street’ and ‘Sukiyaki Meet the World’ in Japan every year, and signed MOU with them.
ONLY JAZZ FOR 12 YEARS
In 2004, when the first festival was held, there was no other music festival that massive audience participated, thus most people were wondered why. However, the festival's focus has been only jazz for 10 years. Jazz includes various subcategories such as swings, fusion, bossa nova, bebop, and world music. The fact that Jarasum Jazz introduces different types of music under name jazz is the major role of the festival. Moreover, through ‘Jarasum International Jazz Concurs,’ ‘Jarasum Creative Music Camp,’ and ‘Korea Jazz Showcase, the festival tries to find talented jazz musicians. Jarasum Jazz created new leisure culture like never before: 'festival like a picnic that you do not need to know the music.' Jarasum Jazz does not compromise the music, but by delivering enjoyable experience, the festival contributes on publicizing jazz.
FESTIVAL AT FANTASY ISLAND
Even though it is only 3 days per year, cumulative number of audience during the 10 years festival is almost one million and six hundred thousand. Jarasum Jazz is awarded as the best cultural tourism festival by Department of Sports and Tourism, which no other music festivals could accomplish. Moreover, thinking about the environment, the festival has been Green Life honorary ambassador for last 5 years. In order to share the external growth with the community, the festival started to hold Gapyeong Band Contest, publish Gapyeong Restaurant Guidebook, produce Jazz Makgeolli · Jazz wine made of the region’s farm products and held Gapyeong Farm Party in the festival site. Besides of these numbers and facts, Jarasum is special place where you can leave your daily life and have gorgeous relaxation. Lying down on the grass, facing the pouring stars, the time with your loved ones and listening to the best jazz. Let’s visit Gapyeong on October.
